Start a new message with a friend
Use the compose icon and search your friends.
You can start a conversation even if you have never messaged that friend before.
What to do
- Open Messages. On a wide desktop it can open in the right-hand pop-out.
- Select the New message compose icon.
- Search by the friend’s name or username, then choose them.
- Write your message and choose Send.

Account controls will ask you to sign in.
Good to know
The picker searches friends, not the contents of past messages. Choose More friends if another result page is available.
